Wageningen University & Research is performing laboratory experiments to test the toxicity of Emamectin Benzoate (EMA) on mudshrimp (Corophium volutator) and on annelid worm (Arenicola marina). These two species are both very abundant in the Northern part of the Atlantic Ocean. The first 28 days individual experiment will be completed soon on mudshrimp and annelid worm, while the second 28 days marine sediment test will be performed on mixed species. For that, the TAPAS team will use the same species with the addition of 1 or 2 more species. Emamectin Benzoate (EMA) has been used extensively in marine aquaculture to treat sea lice infections which have a devastating effect on the production of fish. EMA however, might also be toxic for other marine species.
