Near-field models for regulation and site selection – WP5

Work Package 5 is evaluating near-field models for regulation and site selection of aquaculture. Using a series of existing, adapted and newly developed models, Work Package 5 will illustrate the most appropriate near-field modeling procedures for different types of marine and freshwater aquaculture throughout Europe. The models will focus on the use and/or release of nutrients, carrying capacity and site selection for a range of fish and shellfish species. Marine coastal near-field models will be based around local (farm scale) and regional areas (embayments, fjords etc), and the freshwater models will focus on lakes and ponds. A range of models will be included in this work from simple to complex and will include predictive tools presently used for regulation and those with potential for use. Furthermore, there will also be an evaluation of modeling approaches that could be used for emerging production systems such as Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). 

The models developed in WP5 will build upon the outcomes from the stakeholder analysis (WP2) and will be parameterized and validated using data collected at a series of case studies (WP7). Some of this work will involve input data from WP6 (Far-field models) and will also link with WP3 (Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) of potentially toxic substances) and WP4 (Ecosystem services and societal models). The approaches and outcomes used and developed in WP5 will contribute to WP8 and TAPAS-Smart.
