Work Package 3: Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) of potentially toxic substances

WP3 of the TAPAS project will evaluate existing farm-scale modelling tools for the evaluation of the ecotoxicological impacts generated by potentially toxic substances used in EU aquaculture (e.g. antifouling agents, antimicrobials, antiparasitic treatments), and will contribute to improving them in order to allow testing of the regulatory standards identified in WP2. Furthermore, modeling scenarios for the environmental risk evaluation of potentially toxic substances representing the main aquaculture practices in EU will be generated. WP3 will also compile, develop, and test environmental thresholds for potentially toxic substances used in EU aquaculture with laboratory and semi-field ecotoxicological experiments, and will use them, together with the developed models and scenarios to evaluate the environmental risks posed by current chemical use practices, and to provide measures to minimize chemical discharge and environmental impacts. Finally, chemical and biological monitoring studies will be conducted to test and validate the proposed modeling tools and scenarios under a representative set of aquaculture production systems and environmental conditions representative of EU aquaculture. The resulting set of tools will contribute important components to the sustainability toolbox (WP8).
