In France, aquaculture is dominated by the monoculture production Pacific oyster. University of Nantes, a partner of TAPAS is exploring the potential for diversification within this sector by developing integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA). They are investigating the combined cultivation of Pacific oysters, sea urchins and seaweed. Experiments are being run to study the growth and survival of dulce seaweed (Palmaria palmata) when it uses the dissolved wastes from oysters and sea urchins as a source of food.
